"Why Would I Keep Something I Don't Like?"

Today my roommate said to me:

"Why would I keep something I don't like?"

Huh. OK, cool. Valid point.

I had burned my roommate a CD of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong duets (UH-mazing) and it got the ball rolling on some other jazz singers that we both like--it was a fun convo! Anyways....she then talked about how when she gets new music she'll go through the album and delete the ones she doesn't like. I was all "Why?" (in my infinite wisdom, obv). And she laughed and said "Everyone says that..." She explained how she only wants the REALLY good stuff on her ipod---why would she listens to songs that she doesn't LOVE? Good point (again). It was so odd to me and maybe it was odd because I'm a musician and music is semi-sacred to me (why would you delete some of it?) I made the argument that I like the flow of a CD--the progression of the music, the key changes, the mood it takes me through---blah, blah, blah. Haha.

It's funny though because she went on to say that if she's wearing something and she doesn't love it she'll get rid of it too. Again: Why keep it if I don't like (or love) it? WHOA. What an epiphany to have! It got me thinking how in America and our capitalistic society we love to OWN things. That was another argument of mine: I like owning an entire album (esp operas and musicals--if you delete something then they don't make sense, but still...)

So, yeah, why do we do this to ourselves? Why do we settle? Why do we hold onto things that only make us marginally happy and not completely, utterly, blissfully happy? Or as Andy said on Conan on a "In the Year 3000" skit: It's somewhat awesome instead of TOTALLY awesome.

So I've decided that I now need to GET RID OF IT. If it doesn't make me blissfully happy--DELETE it. Give it AWAY. Pass it ON. Move ON. Stop HOLDING on--because really what's the point? (pause for thinking...). If you know me you know I lovelovelovelovelovelovelovelove to laugh. (And if I could have kept typing love I would have, believe me!) So why not surround myself with the things that make me laugh and not watch/be around/listen to/focus on the things that don't? Obviously I won't be an insane person laughing at inappropriate moments--weeeeelllll---Kidding. You get the point. The point is to stop accepting mediocrity. Easier said than done, right? But why hold onto that super cute flowery dress in my closet because someday it "might" fit? And let's be honest, it won't anytime soon. Why not get rid of it (and all my nail polish I have lying around that I NEVER use) and let something KICK-ASS be a part of my life?

So a mighty huge shout-out to the roomie for opening my eyes to something I knew to be true in the back of my mind but hadn't fully acknowledged. Cause, really, who wants to be around things/people/places/or whatev that don't make you HAPPY? Hint: Not. Me.

The List Full of Grate:
  • The roomie. Thanks!
  • My mom for attempting slang. It made my night. She said: "That's the story on the street." Bwhahaa. Love her!
  • Looking cute and knowing it.
  • Getting rid of the ginormous desk so I didn't have to move it!
  • Sassy one-liners (like in the show I'm doing tomorrow).
  • Dressing up and looking HOT for said sassy one liners.
  • Hitting all the green lights.
  • Listening to India Arie with the windows down after rehearsal. Lovelovelove her.
  • NO BATS AT REHEARSAL TONIGHT! Holla!
I was especially long winded today--but I hope that it got you thinking about the things that are just MEH/OK/WHATEV in your life. GET. RID. OF. IT. Cause you don't need it. I swear! So go to your closet, or itunes, or whatever and delete or give something away. It'll feel good.
